How Long a Kitchen Remodel Really Takes in Rochester

A kitchen remodel is less about demo day and more about the weeks of planning and lead times before it. Here's a realistic timeline for a Rochester project.

How Long a Kitchen Remodel Really Takes in Rochester

The remodel starts long before the sledgehammer

People picture a kitchen remodel as a couple of loud weeks. The construction is the short part. The timeline that actually matters runs from the first design conversation to the day cabinets and countertops are ready to install, and most of that is planning and lead times. Understand the whole arc and you avoid the two classic mistakes: starting demo before materials are in, and underestimating how long good cabinets take to arrive.

---

Phase 1: Design and decisions (2–6 weeks)

Layout, cabinet style, countertop material, appliances, plumbing and electrical changes, finishes. This is where you make the choices that everything downstream depends on. Rushing it is how change-orders and delays get born. The more decisions locked before work starts, the smoother and cheaper the build.

Phase 2: Ordering and lead times (3–10+ weeks)

This is the hidden clock. Cabinets are the long pole — stock cabinets ship in a couple of weeks, semi-custom often runs 4–8 weeks, full custom can be 8–12+. Countertops are templated after cabinets are installed, then fabricated (1–2 weeks for quartz/granite). Appliances and special-order tile have their own lead times. A good contractor orders early and won't start demo until the long-lead items are in hand.

Phase 3: Construction (3–6 weeks for most kitchens)

Roughly, week by week:

  • Demo and rough-in: tear-out, then any plumbing, electrical, and HVAC changes inside the open walls. Older Rochester homes often surface surprises here — knob-and-tube, galvanized pipe, out-of-level floors.
  • Drywall, paint, flooring: close it back up and prep surfaces.
  • Cabinet installation: the kitchen starts to look like a kitchen.
  • Countertop template and install: measured precisely off the set cabinets, then fabricated and installed.
  • Backsplash, fixtures, appliances, final electrical and plumbing hookups, punch list.

Realistic total

For a typical Rochester kitchen: 8–16 weeks start to finish, with maybe 3–6 of those being actual construction. A layout change that moves plumbing, or full custom cabinets, pushes the high end. A cosmetic refresh that keeps the layout runs much shorter.

What causes delays here

  • Starting before materials arrive, then waiting mid-project with a torn-up kitchen.
  • Older-home surprises: wiring, plumbing, or structural issues found at demo.
  • Mid-project changes: swapping a finish or moving a wall after work starts resets parts of the schedule.
  • Countertop timing: they can't be templated until cabinets are in — that gap is normal, not a stall.
  • Permits for plumbing/electrical changes, which a good contractor schedules ahead.

---

How to keep it on track

  • Decide everything you can before demo. Locked decisions are a fast project.
  • Set up a temporary kitchen — a microwave, fridge, and sink elsewhere make the construction weeks livable.
  • Order long-lead items first. Cabinets and specialty pieces drive the calendar.
  • Build in a contingency of time and budget for older-home surprises.

A practical next step

Before chasing quotes, separate what you've decided from what you haven't: layout, cabinet style, counter material, whether plumbing moves. The more that's settled, the more accurate any timeline and price you're given.

A good kitchen remodeler will map the lead times for your specific cabinets and materials up front, so you know the real calendar before demo day — not after.
